Test the Ice Caves Update Now Across Java and Bedrock
Minecraft's final 2026 drop brings frozen biomes, new zombie variants, and building blocks to test in public snapshots and previews.
Minecraft News
Mojang has opened testing for its fourth and final game drop of 2026, focusing entirely on a frozen overhaul. The update introduces ice cave biomes, a new zombie variant called the frostbite, freezing effects, and dozens of new building blocks. Java players can access snapshots numbered 26.4, whilst Bedrock players can join previews and betas through their respective platforms. According to minecraft.net, this is the moment to report bugs and provide feedback before the full release.
What You Can Test Right Now
The ice cave biome generates beneath colder Overworld regions and consists primarily of packed ice and calcite, blockplayguide.com noted. These caves spawn frostbites and strays alongside regular cave mobs. Instead of glow lichen, light comes from ice crystals—decorative blocks that emit ambient sound and can fall as sharp hazards, much like pointed dripstone.
Frostbites are zombie variants designed for cold environments. They throw ice balls at range and inflict the new Freezing effect on melee hits, causing players to shake before taking damage. Regular zombies and husks transform into frostbites when standing in powder snow. Leather armour provides some protection, though it does not eliminate the effect entirely.

Building Blocks and Features
- Brittle ice blocks crack when stepped on and break completely once cracks spread, craftable by adding water to blue ice
- Packed ice brick variants including slabs, stairs, walls, and chiselled blocks in blue tones
- Snow brick sets for indoor arctic builds, available in multiple configurations
- Calcite brick sets, both regular and polished, with pillars included
- Jukebox playlists: stack music discs in a chest above a jukebox to create continuous playback
- New music disc by Hyper Potions, found in igloo basements
Minecraft.net highlighted that sulfur cubes instantly freeze water on contact, eliminating the need to wait for temperature changes. Ice blocks surrounded by other ice over water and under air now produce ambient sounds that fit the frozen aesthetic.
How to Join Testing
Java Edition players should open the Minecraft Launcher, navigate to the Installations tab, and enable snapshots. Bedrock players can access previews on Xbox, Windows 10 and 11, and iOS, whilst Android uses the Google Play beta. Realms subscribers can create a free testing Realm to try features with friends. Mojang warns that testing versions can corrupt worlds, so players should back up saves or use separate folders for test builds.
Community Response
Players testing the update have expressed enthusiasm for the aesthetic improvements and new building materials. The frostbite mob and freezing mechanic have generated interest, though some players worry about difficulty balance in ice caves. Concerns about icicles falling as environmental hazards have been raised, particularly regarding younger players exploring caves. The jukebox playlist feature has received positive feedback for quality-of-life improvements. Overall, the community appears eager to see the final release, though some wish for additional content beyond the ice theme.
Mojang has not announced a release date or official name for the update. Feedback can be submitted at feedback.minecraft.net, and bugs should be reported at bugs.mojang.com. As of October 2026, the update remains in testing phase only.
