Minecraft arrives on Switch 2 with free upgrade and visual boost

Minecraft launched on Nintendo Switch 2 on 27 October with a free upgrade path for existing digital owners and enhanced graphics through the Vibrant Visuals system.

Minecraft News

Minecraft is now playable on Nintendo Switch 2, bringing the blocky sandbox to the new console with visual improvements unavailable on the original Switch. According to minecraft.net, players who already own a digital copy of Minecraft on the original Switch can upgrade to the Switch 2 version at no cost between 27 October 2026 and 31 January 2027. Those who own physical copies can also take advantage of discounted upgrade offers during the same window, though the free path applies only to digital owners in most regions—Japan, Taiwan and Thailand have small regional fees.

The Switch 2 edition includes Vibrant Visuals, Minecraft's visual upgrade system that adds directional lighting, volumetric fog, dynamic shadows and other graphical enhancements. Twisted Voxel notes that these improvements apply to supported Marketplace content as well, though Vibrant Visuals are not available during split-screen play or with certain Marketplace worlds. The game file size comes to approximately 1.2 GB on the eShop.

Three digital editions are available at launch. The Standard Edition costs $29.99 for new buyers, whilst the Deluxe Collection and Ultimate Collection offer additional content including add-ons and Minecoins. All versions include the updated Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, an exclusive for Switch 2 that features 40 character skins, 15 music tracks and Mario-themed locations optimised for the new visual system. A physical Standard Edition is also available at retail.

Players can migrate their existing Nintendo Switch worlds to Switch 2, allowing them to continue their progress on the new hardware. Cross-platform multiplayer remains supported, and Switch 2 owners can use split-screen play locally. Online multiplayer requires a Nintendo Switch Online subscription and a Microsoft Account for cross-platform sessions.

What players are saying

The community response has been largely positive about the free upgrade offer and world migration features, with many players appreciating the ability to carry their saves forward without additional cost. However, some have expressed frustration that Vibrant Visuals cannot be used during split-screen multiplayer, a limitation that affects local co-op sessions. Others have questioned whether the visual improvements justify upgrading immediately, noting that the original Switch version remains functional. The Mario Mash-Up Pack has generated enthusiasm among Nintendo fans, though a few players have noted they would prefer additional exclusive content beyond cosmetics. Overall, the sentiment leans toward approval of the upgrade path's generosity, though some see the timing as a missed opportunity for more substantial new features.

The free upgrade window runs until 31 January 2027, giving digital owners a three-month window to claim their Switch 2 copy. Players should note that Minecoins purchased or included with Switch editions must remain within the Nintendo ecosystem and cannot be transferred to other platforms.
