Minecraft Snapshot 26.4 Snapshot 6: Snow Bricks and Cold Sulfur Cubes

The latest Minecraft Java snapshot introduces a new decorative blockset and a frosty variant of the Sulfur Cube, alongside significant technical changes to memory.

Minecraft News

The winter-themed updates for Minecraft 26.4 are continuing to gather pace with the release of Snapshot 6. Following several weeks of icy additions, Mojang has now introduced a dedicated Snow Brick blockset and a new freezing mechanic for the recently added Sulfur Cubes. These changes are part of what Bedrock Edition players are seeing labelled as "Drop 4 of 2026," a collection of features that focus heavily on expanding the colder biomes of the Overworld.

Building with Snow and Ice

The headline addition in this snapshot is the Snow Brick family. According to Mojang, these blocks provide a cleaner, more structured look for players building in snowy environments. You can craft them by placing four snow blocks in a square. Unlike some other stone-based blocks, MineHost points out that the Stonecutter currently cannot be used to create the stairs, slabs, or walls for this set; players must use a traditional crafting table. Furthermore, MineHost warns that these bricks require a shovel to be harvested; breaking them by hand or with a pickaxe will result in the block being lost entirely.

This follows the previous addition of Packed Ice Bricks. GamingRoute notes that these ice-based bricks are crafted from a 2x2 grid of Packed Ice and, unlike their snowy counterparts, can be processed in a Stonecutter. These blocks are intended to populate the new Ice Cave biomes, which generate beneath cold Overworld regions. These caves are filled with icicles, ice crystals, and large columns of frozen water.

The Cold Sulfur Cube and Freezing Effects

The Sulfur Cube, a mob archetype introduced earlier in the 26.4 cycle, has received a new variant. By giving a Sulfur Cube a block of Blue Ice, it transforms into a Cold Sulfur Cube. GamingRoute explains that this variant behaves similarly to the "Fast Sliding" archetype but with a unique environmental interaction: it floats on water. As it moves across the surface, it generates a disk of Frosted Ice beneath it, mimicking the Frost Walker enchantment. MineHost clarifies that this effect only triggers if the cube begins its movement from solid ground and there is air directly above the water.

Combat in cold biomes has also become more dangerous with the introduction of the Frostbite zombie. This variant can switch between melee attacks and throwing Ice Balls. Being hit by these projectiles applies the Freezing effect, which causes the player to shake and take damage over time. GamingRoute mentions that while Leather Armor protects the player from taking damage, it does not prevent the effect from being applied. These Ice Balls can also be used in brewing to create Potions of Freezing.

Technical Changes and Server Performance

Snapshot 6 introduces a major change to how the game handles computer memory. Mojang has updated the Java startup options so the game now automatically scales its memory usage. MineHost explains that the game will now claim up to 25% of a computer's available RAM, though it is hard-capped at 4GB. This means a machine with 16GB of RAM will automatically allocate 4GB to Minecraft, whereas a machine with 8GB will only allocate 2GB. This change is designed to improve stability for casual players, though server owners will still need to manage their own dedicated limits.

For those who enjoy automation, Snapshot 4 and 5 introduced jukebox playlists. Channy demonstrated that placing a chest or hopper on top of a jukebox allows it to cycle through multiple music discs. Channy also noted that different discs now output different Redstone signal strengths, allowing for music-based timers and contraptions.

Community Theories and Feedback

The community response to the 26.4 snapshots has been largely positive, with many players on YouTube suggesting that Mojang is "locked in" and delivering high-quality updates at a faster rate. However, some players remain cautious, noting that while the new blocks are welcome, they hope to see even more variety before the full release.

AlexMix has sparked discussion regarding potential future additions, speculating that a Calcite blockset and new snowy plants might be next. This theory is based on the recent addition of ambient sounds for frozen oceans and ice caves; AlexMix suggests that purple plants or "frosted grass" might be added to give these biomes more life. There is also a strong desire among builders for a "Chiseled" variant of snow or ice, though some commenters argue that chiselling snow is realistically impossible and suggest "ice sculptures" as a better alternative.

While Snapshot 6 focuses on the cold, technical players are exploring the new "domain_warp" density function. Mojang admits this tool allows for complex terrain bending but warns that it can significantly impact performance if used too aggressively. As always, players are encouraged to back up their worlds before testing these snapshots, as they remain experimental versions of the game.
