Minecraft Switch 2: Free Upgrade, Vibrant Visuals, Mario Pack
Minecraft launches on Nintendo Switch 2 with a free upgrade for existing digital owners, enhanced graphics, and an updated Super Mario Mash-Up Pack.
Minecraft News
Minecraft is now live on Nintendo Switch 2, and the upgrade path for existing players is generous. According to minecraft.net, anyone who owns a digital copy of Minecraft on the original Switch can upgrade to the Switch 2 Standard Edition completely free until 31 January 2027. The offer applies across most regions, though Japan, Taiwan and Thailand have nominal fees. Players with physical copies can also access discounted upgrades to the Deluxe or Ultimate Collections by launching the game on Switch 2 during the promotional window.
The Switch 2 version introduces Vibrant Visuals, a visual enhancement package that brings directional lighting, volumetric fog, dynamic shadows and other graphical improvements to the blocky world. Nintendo's announcement emphasises that these upgrades transform how the game looks on the new hardware. However, there are limitations: Vibrant Visuals do not work during split-screen play or with certain Marketplace worlds and content, as noted by both minecraft.net and Nintendo's official release.

Nintendo has bundled an updated Super Mario Mash-Up Pack as an exclusive, featuring 40 character skins and 15 music tracks inspired by the Mario franchise. The pack has been refreshed to take full advantage of Vibrant Visuals, giving familiar Mario locations a fresh appearance. All three digital editions—Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate—include this pack, though the higher tiers add extra content such as additional add-ons and Minecoins.
For players new to Switch 2, the Standard Edition costs $29.99 on the Nintendo eShop, according to Twisted Voxel. The Deluxe and Ultimate Collections offer more content at higher price points, with discounts available to existing Switch owners during the upgrade window. A physical Standard Edition will also arrive at retail, though minecraft.net did not specify a date.
World migration is seamless. Players can carry their existing Nintendo Switch saves directly to Switch 2 and continue where they left off. Cross-platform multiplayer remains supported, and split-screen play is available locally. Online multiplayer requires a Nintendo Switch Online subscription and a Microsoft Account for cross-platform sessions. The game's file size is listed at 1.2 GB on the eShop.
Community Reception
The announcement has generated mixed reactions from players and content creators. Many appreciate the free upgrade offer and the ability to carry worlds forward, viewing it as a fair transition path. The visual improvements have drawn interest, particularly among players who value aesthetic enhancements. However, some criticism has emerged around the limitations of Vibrant Visuals in split-screen mode—a significant restriction for local multiplayer fans. A few players have also expressed frustration that the free upgrade only applies to digital owners, leaving physical copy holders to pay for discounted versions rather than receiving a completely free path. Others have questioned whether the visual upgrades justify the hardware jump, especially since the improvements are unavailable in certain gameplay scenarios. Overall, sentiment leans positive, but the caveats around split-screen and regional pricing have tempered enthusiasm in some quarters of the community.
