Minecraft arrives on Switch 2 with Vibrant Visuals and Mario pack

Minecraft launches natively on Nintendo Switch 2 on 27 October with enhanced graphics and a refreshed Super Mario crossover pack.

Minecraft News

Minecraft is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 as a native version on 27 October, bringing the game's most substantial visual overhaul to the console. According to minecraft.net, the Switch 2 build is optimised for the hardware's greater power and will ship with Vibrant Visuals enabled by default—the first time the graphics system has launched as standard on any platform.

Vibrant Visuals, which Mojang released in June 2025 alongside the Chase the Skies update, transforms how Minecraft looks without changing how it plays. Gaming.net explains the system adds directional lighting that shifts shadows as the sun moves, volumetric fog, water reflections that carry light across lake beds, and clouds stretching into the distance. The textures governing how light interacts with blocks have been updated, while shadows remain pixelated to preserve the game's blocky aesthetic.

The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, exclusive to Nintendo versions of Minecraft, is receiving an update to leverage the new graphics. According to Windows Report, the pack includes 15 music tracks and 40 character skins inspired by the Mario franchise, alongside themed locations such as Peach's Castle and Delfino Plaza. All three digital editions—Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate—bundle the updated pack.

Pricing and upgrade path

The Standard Edition costs $29.99, whilst the Deluxe Collection is $39.99 and the Ultimate Collection $49.99, according to Windows Report. However, players who own the digital version on the original Switch can upgrade to the Switch 2 Standard Edition for free until 31 January 2027. Twisted Voxel notes that discounted upgrades to higher tiers are also available during this window. Physical Switch owners receive a separate in-game offer for a discounted Ultimate Collection when launching the original version on Switch 2.

Existing worlds transfer to the new version, allowing players to continue their builds without starting fresh. The Switch 2 version supports cross-platform multiplayer and local split-screen play, though Vibrant Visuals does not apply in split-screen mode or with certain Marketplace content, as noted by nintendo.com.

Limitations and performance options

  • Vibrant Visuals unavailable during split-screen multiplayer or with some Marketplace worlds and content
  • Players can select a 'Favour Performance' preset to prioritise frame rate over visual fidelity
  • Graphics mode can be switched back to classic rendering through video settings
  • Online multiplayer requires Nintendo Switch Online subscription (sold separately)
  • File size estimated at 1.2 GB

Creator and player response

The announcement has generated mixed reactions from the community. Content creators covering the news, such as CaptainSparklez 2, have focused on broader Minecraft updates rather than the Switch 2 launch specifically. In YouTube comments, players express enthusiasm about the visual improvements and Mario integration, with some praising the opportunity to build Mario-themed structures with enhanced graphics. However, criticism exists around the limitations—some viewers question why Vibrant Visuals is disabled in split-screen, and others express concern that certain gameplay modes feel restricted. A few players have voiced scepticism about whether the graphics overhaul justifies the upgrade cost, whilst others welcome the free upgrade path for existing digital owners.
