Minecraft Java: Calcite Gets Full Block Family in 26.4 Snapshot 7

Minecraft Java 26.4 Snapshot 7 adds twelve calcite variants, a new music disc, and keyboard controls for crafting screens.

Minecraft News

Minecraft Java Edition's latest snapshot, released on 3 November 2026, marks the final batch of new gameplay features before the 26.4 update goes live. According to SyntaxMine, Mojang has now declared that only polish and bug fixes remain, with pre-releases expected to follow. The snapshot introduces a complete building palette for calcite, transforming a block that previously appeared only around amethyst geodes and stony peaks into a versatile construction material.

Calcite now comes in three distinct families, as detailed by Endgame Tools. Players can craft four raw calcite blocks in a 2×2 pattern to make polished calcite, then repeat the process to create polished calcite bricks. Each family—raw calcite, polished calcite, and polished calcite bricks—includes slabs, stairs, walls, and pillars, bringing the total to twelve new blocks. The stonecutter offers a more efficient alternative, allowing players to craft any variant directly from a single raw calcite block, saving materials on stairs and other shaped pieces.

Calcite's three building families now give builders winter-themed alternatives to stone and deepslate variants.

Ice caves provide the primary source for bulk calcite mining, with the mineral now appearing in bands throughout the biome's walls. SyntaxMine notes that this abundance makes calcite collection straightforward for players working on large construction projects. Alongside the stone variants, Snapshot 7 completes three winter building families—packed ice bricks arrived in Snapshot 5, followed by snow bricks in Snapshot 6.

The snapshot also introduces Flurry, a new music disc by Hyper Potions lasting two minutes and thirty-four seconds. According to Endgame Tools, players have a 30 per cent chance to find it in igloo basement chests, with comparators reading a signal strength of 7 when the disc plays. Only half of all igloos contain basements, hidden beneath trapdoors concealed by carpets, so locating one may require some exploration.

Mojang has hidden a decorative block "somewhere" in the game without revealing its location. The Minecraft Wiki identifies it as chiseled soulshale, a block depicting a singer that appears exclusively in ancient city chests and does not yet appear in the Creative inventory. SyntaxMine marks this information as provisional until Mojang makes an official announcement.

Accessibility and Technical Changes

Snapshot 7 represents a significant step toward making Minecraft more accessible. PatchBot reports that crafting tables, furnaces, chests, and other gameplay screens now support keyboard navigation without requiring a mouse. The narrator now reads aloud slot contents, item tooltips, slot purposes such as armour or fuel, and position numbers. The Creative inventory and recipe book are not yet supported, but Mojang has invited feedback on the feature's development.

A notable graphics change affects how the game selects its rendering backend. When the Graphics API setting remains on Default, the game now randomly chooses between OpenGL and Vulkan on each launch. IGN explains that Mojang implemented this temporary measure because recent rendering changes received minimal testing on OpenGL while snapshots defaulted to Vulkan. The studio plans to revert this behaviour in a future snapshot, but players who want consistent performance can manually select their preferred backend.

  • Smaller UI refinements include grey outlines on hovered list entries, a hidden mouse cursor during keyboard navigation, tooltips for the recipe book button, and purple Realms Play buttons
  • The main menu now displays a new panorama for the update
  • Fourteen bugs were fixed, primarily affecting the stonecutter, loom, enchanting table, and trading screens
  • Bedrock's Preview and Beta 26.70.23 received the same calcite blocks and Flurry disc on the same day

Community Reception

Content creators have responded positively to the snapshot's additions. ElRichMC praised the calcite palette as a welcome expansion to the game's building blocks, though some viewers questioned the logic of certain crafting recipes and stonecutter compatibility. Russian-language creator Циан highlighted the chiseled soulshale as a mysterious teaser, with community comments speculating about its connection to an unrevealed dimension. Players generally welcomed the keyboard accessibility improvements, viewing them as long-overdue quality-of-life enhancements. However, some viewers expressed concern that the new blocks represent reskins rather than entirely new content, with comparisons drawn to existing stone brick variants. The community remains engaged with the update cycle, with many players eager to test features in separate worlds before the full release.

Snapshot 7 is available through the 9Minecraft wiki for Java Edition players. As with all snapshots, backing up your world before testing is essential, as these builds can occasionally cause save corruption. The full release date for 26.4 remains unannounced, though pre-releases typically arrive within weeks of the final snapshot.
